“Creativity is a Habit” by Dr. Robert J. Sternberg

Dr. Robert J. Sternberg, current Regents Professor of Psychology and Education, George Kaiser Family Foundation Chair in Leadership Ethics, and Provost and Senior Vice President at Oklahoma State University, graduated from Yale with a B.A. in Psychology in 1972 and a Ph.D from Stanford in 1975. His interest in psychology stemmed from his early onset test anxiety– after poor performance on an exam, he thought that perhaps this form of testing was not an accurate measure of his actual knowledge and abilities. After retaking the same kind of test a year later in a room of younger students, Sternberg scored much higher and went on to create his first intelligence test the following year, naming it the Sternberg Test of Mental Ability (STOMA).
Having served as the President of the American Psychology Association in 2003, Sternberg has a highly decorated academic and professional background. He has been listed by the APA Monitor as one of the top 100 psychologists of the 20th century, has been awarded 13 honorary doctorates to various universities around the world, and has authored or co-authored over 1400 articles, book chapters, and books. He was also a workshop session presenter at the State of Creativity Forum in Oklahoma City this last year, with a presentation titled “Beyond ACTs & SATs: The Measurement of Creativity in College Admissions” where he discussed and explored new college admission assessments developed at Yale, Tufts and Oklahoma State Universities and how they can advance admission processes at all levels of schooling.
In this month’s featured article, “Creativity is a Habit”, Sternberg discusses just that – Creativity as a habit – and how to foster and nurture creativity in a variety of settings. To read the full article, click here. |
