History
Creative Oklahoma was established in 2006 by founding chairmen Burns Hargis and Susan McCalmont, who worked closely with Sir Ken Robinson to craft strategies for societal change through creative thinking. In 2010, the organization made a significant impact by hosting the first Creativity World Forum in Oklahoma City.
As a founding board member and former president of Creative Oklahoma, Susan McCalmont played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s legacy. She helped establish the State of Creativity Forum, an annual national networking and educational event, and positioned Oklahoma as the only internationally recognized District of Creativity in the U.S. through the Districts of Creativity Network based in Flanders, Belgium. Susan also founded the National Creativity Network, linking 12 creative regions across the U.S. and Canada.
Under McCalmont’s leadership, Creative Oklahoma launched several key initiatives that have left a lasting impact, including:
- National Creativity Network
- Creativity World Forums and State of Creativity Forums
- District of Creativity in North America
- Creativity Incubator

- Oklahoma Creativity Ambassadors
- Oklahoma Creative Communities
