Collective Intelligence

co-blog-2

I am proud to introduce Mr. Ed Long from Cross Sector Innovations.  He is an amazing leader and connector for Oklahoma.  Ed understands transformational leadership and what it takes to truly make a difference.  The article below is part of a continuing series on Creativity, Innovation and Connection.

Innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit are present in all sectors: public, private and nonprofit. New ways of doing business, creative problem-solving and inspiring ingenuity exist in pockets with untapped potential for improving our lives, as well as those of our family, friends and neighbors. Solutions that improve quality of life and offer renewed hope are abundant. But, in order to maximize our potential, we first need to recognize that the solutions do not lie with one particular sector or industry.

It is not efficient or productive to debate whether a problem and its remedy are within the scope of government, the nonprofit sector, faith-based coalitions or private enterprise. In reality, outcomes that affect us all such as economic and workforce development, education and good health (physical, mental, spiritual) can be connected to multiple sectors both in terms of root causes and effective responses.

It is equally inefficient to focus too much attention on ideas and solutions that appear to fit neatly in large categories of scale (e.g., statewide, nationwide). While in some cases this is desirable and feasible, we must also be open to instances where local solutions aligned with unique community strengths are optimal in that problems can be solved more effectively and with fewer resources.

As a state, we must do a better job of identifying the expertise, innovation and entrepreneurial energy across all sectors and bring them together in a creative way that makes us all stronger while maximizing existing, often untapped resources. More is possible and we must expect it. But, we must also be part of the transformation.

Successful cross-sector innovation requires careful crafting and investment in effective leadership, smart funding/investment models, results-based agendas, transformative structures, transparent and inclusive processes, creative cultures and shared values that transcend traditional organizational boundaries. Reality does not unfold within the walls of a government agency or authoritative boundaries, and our current approach to making Oklahoma stronger is not adequate to meet this reality.

As we meet and work with Oklahomans committed to making a difference and focused on shared goals and results, we are energized like never before. There is a recognition that to improve outcomes for ourselves, our families, friends and neighbors, we must change how we fund, organize and implement innovative solutions. We are beginning to move in the right direction, and are committed to doing all that we can to turn hope into reality.

Creative Oklahoma shares this vision and works diligently to bring together individuals and resources in eight Creative Communities across the state to support local solutions for local challenges. The application of creative problem solving to social and economic issues changes how we view problems and thus how we view the solutions. This is truly game-changing.

Social innovation and creative solutions are emerging around the the state. Going forward, we will be posting examples of what is taking place, what remains to be done and ideas for getting there. We hope you will join us as we move forward. Your strategies, ideas, questions and criticisms are needed to drive positive change.
